چکیده

We report the first detection of flux variability in the most luminous X-ray source in the southern ring of the Cartwheel galaxy. XMM–Newton data show that the luminosity has varied over a timescale of six months from L0.5−10keV ∼ 1.3× 10 41 erg s, consistent with the previous Chandra observation, to L0.5−10keV ∼ < 6.4× 10 erg s. This fact provides the first evidence that the source is compact in nature and is not a collection of individual fainter sources, such as supernova remnants. The source has been repeatedly observed at the very high luminosity level of L0.5−10keV ∼ 1.3× 10 41 erg s for a period of at least 4 years before dimming at the current level. It represents then the first example of an accreting object revealed in a long lived state of extremely high luminosity.

Variability of ultraluminous X-ray sources in the Cartwheel Ring

The Cartwheel is one of the most outstanding examples of a dynamically perturbed galaxy where star formation is occurring inside the ring–like structure. In previous studies with Chandra, we detected 16 Ultra Luminous X-ray sources lying along the southern portion of the ring. Their Luminosity Function is consistent with them being in the high luminosity tail of the High Mass X-ray Binaries dis...

Low metallicity and ultra-luminous X-ray sources in the Cartwheel galaxy

Low-metallicity (Z < ∼ 0.05Z⊙) massive ( > ∼ 40M⊙) stars might end their life by directly collapsing into massive black holes (BHs, 30 < ∼ mBH/M⊙ < ∼ 80). More than ∼ 10 massive BHs might have been generated via this mechanism in the metal-poor ring galaxy Cartwheel, during the last ∼ 10 yr. We show that such BHs might power most of the ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) observed in the Cartwh...

A thorough study of the intriguing X - ray emission from the Cartwheel ring

the date of receipt and acceptance should be inserted later Abstract. We present the results from the high resolution Chandra observation of the Cartwheel galaxy. Many individual sources are resolved in the image, mostly associated with the outer ring. All detected sources have a very high X-ray luminosity (≥ 10 39 erg s −1) that classifies them as Ultra Luminous X-ray sources (ULX). The bright...

The Ultra Luminous X - ray sources in the High Velocity System of NGC 1275

We report the results of a study of X-ray point sources coincident with the High Velocity System (HVS) projected in front of NGC 1275. A very deep X-ray image of the core of the Perseus cluster made with the Chandra Observatory has been used. We find a population of Ultra-Luminous X-ray sources (ULX; 7 sources with L X (0.5 − 7.0 keV) > 7 × 10 39 erg s −1). As with the ULX populations in the An...

Object with a 2 hour period in M 51

Ultra-luminous X-Ray Objects are off-nucleus point sources with L X = 10 39-10 41 erg/s but the nature of such systems are largely unidentified. Here we report a 2.1 hour period observed in a Chandra ACIS observation for ULX M51 X-7, which is located on the edge of a young star cluster in the star forming region in a spiral arm. In two ACIS observations separated by one year, the ULX changed fr...
